Everything you need to know to prepare for and pass your Goethe-Zertifikat with PrepDeutsch.
What is the Goethe-Zertifikat and who recognizes it?
The Goethe-Zertifikat is an official German-language qualification issued by the Goethe-Institut, the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. It certifies your language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is recognized worldwide by universities, employers and authorities, for example for study, work or residency purposes.
Which CEFR levels does PrepDeutsch cover, and how do I find my level?
PrepDeutsch covers CEFR levels A1, A2, B1 and B2, from complete beginner to independent advanced user. If you are not sure of your level, you can take our free placement test, which points you to the most suitable level. You can then start your preparation at the right place without wasting time.
How does the free placement test work?
The placement test is completely free, and you can start it without creating an account. It assesses your skills through a series of questions of increasing difficulty and then estimates your CEFR level (from A1 to B2). At the end, you receive a clear recommendation on which level to begin your preparation with.
What does the exam format look like?
The Goethe-Zertifikat exam consists of four modules: Hören (listening), Lesen (reading), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking). Each module tests a separate skill, and you need to reach at least 60% of the points to pass. PrepDeutsch mirrors this format so you can practice under realistic conditions.
Are the B1 and B2 exams modular?
Yes, the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and B2 exams are modular. This means you can take and pass each module (Hören, Lesen, Schreiben, Sprechen) separately, in the same session or across different sessions. This lets you focus on the modules you still need to complete.
How long does it take to prepare for an exam?
The time required depends on your starting level, your pace and how regularly you study. As a rough guide, expect around 2–3 months for A1, 3–4 months for A2, 4–6 months for B1 and 6–9 months for B2. Regular practice, even short daily sessions, produces better results than intensive but irregular study.
What does PrepDeutsch offer?
PrepDeutsch offers interactive exercises, mock exams with scoring that matches the real exam, and the option to submit your written and spoken work for correction by a teacher. Progress tracking lets you see your results and target your weak spots. Everything is organized by level and module for structured preparation.
Is it free, and what is free?
Levels A1 and A2 come with lifetime free access: simply create an account at signup to use them. You can also start the placement test without an account. This lets you explore the platform and make progress through the first levels with no commitment.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. PrepDeutsch is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that you can install on your phone or tablet just like a regular app. It also works offline, so you can study even without an internet connection. This means you can practice whenever and wherever you like.
How are writing (Schreiben) and speaking (Sprechen) corrected?
For Schreiben, you write and submit your text directly on the platform; for Sprechen, you record and submit your audio response. A teacher reviews your work and sends back a correction with personalized feedback. This helps you spot recurring mistakes and improve on the skills that are hardest to assess on your own.
